Smoke sensor for zone 0 locations

March 2002 Sensors & Transducers

The SS 201/421 Smoke Sensor is a (SABS 549 approved intrinsically safe) single chamber, combustion particle detector of the ionisation type. The sensor is designed to give an output in the presence of particulate products of combustion in the atmosphere (ie smoke particles).

As it has been approved for use in zone O hazardous locations, it is therefore approved for all underground hazardous locations.

The sensor is specifically configured for underground telemetry applications and is designed to interface with the Spero SL 2000 Environmental Monitoring Telemetry System as well as the AARL (Anglo American Research Laboratories.)

Environmental monitoring telemetry system

(Also widely referred to as the AARL Fire Detection system). The SS 201 has a 0-1 mA signal output (for use with the AARL Fire Detection system compatible transmitters and transceivers), while the SS 421 has a 4-20 mA signal output. The sensors are ruggedly constructed and are able to operate in dusty, humid (tending to saturation) and hot conditions ie all of the conditions typically found in mines. All components are manufactured from materials that have proven corrosion resistance. The sensor consists of a shielded ionisation chamber, a radioactive source of ß particles (Krypton 85 gas), an ion-collecting electrode and a current amplifier. The electronics are epoxy potted inside a fibre-reinforced housing to ensure moisture and dust exclusion.
