Easy-to-use dynamometer indicator

September 2000 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Instrotech's new locally manufactured dynamometer indicator is self-contained and easy to use, offering all the features of more expensive systems. The Model 5014 is used to measure engine power or road power including transmission on rolling road dynamometers. A loadcell input measures the torque which can be displayed in Nm or ft lbs. Digital inputs from proximity sensors or shaft encoders measure RPM. These two values are multiplied together and displayed in kW or horsepower.

The DIN 48 x 96 mm panel mount indicator has a 5% digit LED with -199 999 to 199 999 counts display. Excitation for up to three loadcells and 18-24 V d.c. supply for the proximity switch or encoder are standard. The stable 10 V d.c. bridge excitation output voltage includes sense feedback to compensate for line variations. The precision differential instrumentation op-amp front end ensures high stability and accuracy for millivolt input from the loadcells in the dynamometer system.

Calibration is simple. Precalibrated ranges can be allocated zero and full-scale values. These can be adjusted on site to allow for back-balance (dead-weight) offset and single point span calibration (test weight trim).

A wide range of options is available such as 0 to 10 V, 0 to 20 mA and 4 to 20 mA analog output for external power control, up to four alarms and parallel BCD.

With the availability of RS232/RS485 communications using Digibus or ASCII bus protocols all information, torque, RPM and power, can be downloaded to a computer to allow readouts to be printed in graph format if required.
