Laser sensor detects small parts with ease

February 2002 Sensors & Transducers

With a spot diameter of 0,5 mm, the diffuse reflective laser sensors detect edges, small objects and small diameter holes with accuracy. These high-speed laser sensors of the Wenglor YD/YW series have a switching frequency of 1 kHz and can be set within a range of 40 to 150 mm. The background suppression function increases the sensor's accuracy, because it operates practically independent of the colour of the object to be recognised.

Device alignment is easy thanks to the use of visible red laser light. The sensor is equipped with contamination warning, and can be supplied with antivalent PNP or NPN output.

Rugged stainless steel housings make these sensors insensitive to mechanical stress and chemical influences, an example would be as used in the food processing industry. The M18x1 housing design allows for easy mounting. The angled version of this sensor is also capable of sensing around corners. The retro-reflective laser light barriers, also in metric stainless steel housing, available in angled version as well, offer the same advantages.

One of the special features of the Wenglor XD/XW series is the very small spot, which has a diameter of only 0,7 mm at a distance of 35 cm. This allows for the detection of the smallest of parts. Reliable working ranges of up to 14 m can be achieved, with ample reserves.

The sensors maximum switching frequency is 3 kHz and its polarisation filters eliminate the possibility of inadvertent switching caused by high gloss surfaces. The small spot also allows for the use of a very small reflector, eg Wenglor type Y, measuring 23 x 13,7 mm.
