Penmac visits the winelands

January 2002 News

Mountains, picturesque valleys and world renown wine routes are ideas that spring to mind ahead of, for example, instrumentation, PLCs, sensors etc when one talks about the town of Stellenbosch. The 15 November 2001 was an occasion when some of these perceptions were changed, and while the mountains, valleys and wine routes, I am pleased to say are still there, the addition of an instrumentation and control exhibition amid the winelands did add a distinctive bouquet for the day.

A team of control and instrumentation exhibitionists set off a few days ahead of the Penmac show in Stellenbosch to prepare for the one day show at the Neelsie Centre on the university campus. The focus of the exhibition was to host state-of-the-art technology in this field at a central location for users and would-be users of control, instrumentation and automation products.

The exhibition doors opened to visitors at 12h00, however interest in the exhibits was such that numerous enthusiastic visitors had to be encouraged to have a cup of coffee downstairs until the doors officially opened. Being displaced from Cape Town, much criticism was offered as to the wisdom of the location, however, the visitor support for this exhibition took everyone by surprise. Not only was there strong support from the surrounding areas and Cape Town central, but also from much further afield such as Vredenburg, Saldanha, Somerset West and Bonnievale. A team of 30 visitors travelled all the way from Saldanha Bay and a similar team from Namakwa Sands. Thanks for visiting guys!

This first exhibition initiative into the area by Penmac has clearly indicated a need for information about merging technologies to be disseminated into this area, and the following companies are among those that took up the challenge:

ABB Automation, AC/DC Dynamics, Adroit Technologies, Alldos, Anglo Allied Engineering, ATI Systems, Atlas Industrial Systems, Burkert Contromatic, Control Techniques, Endress & Hauser, Futuristix, Honeywell SA, Ind. Auto & Control, Instrotech, Lapp Cable, Loadtech, Massamatic, National Instruments, Phoenix Contact, PLC Direct, Ramsey Technology, Schneider Electrical, Spectrum Communication, Thermacon, Tim Controls, Titan Technology, TM Automation, TOGA Engineering, UPS Cape, Yokogawa SA.

The schedule for 2002 is as follows:
