New generation lightning current and overvoltage arrester

December 2001 Electrical Power & Protection

The new DEHNventil TT is a combined Class I lightning current arrester and Class II overvoltage arrester in one compact unit requiring only 30% of the space of similar devices. No decoupling inductance coils are necessary between the Class I and Class II arresters. The complete unit can easily be installed in different types of power supply systems. Previously, up to 20 devices had to be installed and connected to provide the same level of protection.

By using the encapsulated spark gap technology, safety distances to adjacent components within the distribution cabinet are unnecessary. Even at fault currents up to 25 kA r.m.s. a 35 A fuse will not trip when the device extinguishes the follow on current.

DEHNventil makes calculations unnecessary. Its discharge capability meets protection level 1 in accordance with SABS, IEC, EN and VDE standards, the highest requirements of lightning protection at present. It is capable of protecting equipment, even in the case of a lightning strike with an intensity of 200 000 A (10/350).

The combined current and overvoltage arrester has no leakage current, which allows direct use of the device upstream of the meter, and when testing the insulation, no disconnection is required. The device is compatible with other surge arresters in the DEHN RED/LINE family. By using the twin terminals, connection is easy, and inductive volt drop across long connection cables is avoided. An additional bus bar terminal at the output increases the combination possibilities with other DIN rail mounted components.

LED indication is provided, or if required, the optional DEHNsignal DV remote monitoring module informs the user on the state of the protection, even when he is not on site. All DEHNventil devices have an additional earth terminal. This allows a safe connection to the main earth bar as well as short connection to the protective earth conductor of the power supply system. DEHN is represented locally by Surge Technology.
