Magnet offers electrical inspection service

October 2016 News

Magnet offers local industry a specialist on-site inspection service to ensure a plant’s electrical installation complies with the law, in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 Electrical Installation Regulations. Johan Roets, Magnet’s training and site inspection manager with over 35 years’ experience in the electrical sector, conducts the inspections “It is critical, whether it is an electrical installation in the home environment or in the workplace, that the electrician possesses appropriate qualifications and is a registered electrical contractor. The onus is on the user of any electrical installation to ensure this is the case,” explains Roets. “An electrical compliance certificate is proof that the electrical installation is safe and complies with the current OSH Act and regulations. In the event of damage to property resulting from an electrical fault,

the insurance company will require a valid electrical certificate.”

Magnet’s inspection and test programme is based on the Electrical Code of Practice SANS 10142-1. This service is offered to diverse industries, including shopping centres, hotels, banks, hospitals, industrial premises and hazardous environments.

It also offers a power quality analysis service to industries that include the mines, metal manufacturing, sugar mills, the railways, power utilities and electrical consultants. This encompasses power factor correction, harmonic filtering and balancing of the load, as well as checking the general power quality of the installation, i.e. voltage surges and dips, current unbalance, inrush current values, power and energy. The company also offers a highly effective power factor correction (PFC) service, designed to protect electrical and electronic equipment from potential damage and to reduce electricity demand.

Magnet’s specialist training division, also headed by Johan Roets, meets the growing demand in industry for practical training in product selection, energy efficiency, repair and maintenance requirements, as well as safety inspection in all sectors, including hazardous locations. The company also runs a one day refresher course on the SANS 10142-1 Wiring Code.
