Insufficient sealing of exciter gearboxes was reducing operating time while oil leakage from external seals was posing a significant environmental issue for a leading manufacturer of vibrating screens. The company approached engineering and rotating technology specialist, SKF South Africa, for a solution.
“We inspected the gearbox’s current sealing arrangement to establish the effectiveness of the mechanical components and we also examined the lubricant to determine its effectiveness in vibratory applications,” explains SKF application engineer, André van Loggerenberg. “While the seal was sufficient mechanically, we discovered that the incorrect lubrication was being used. We immediately recommended SKF LGHB2 grease to our customer, due to the lubricant’s high suitability for vibratory applications.”
Vigorous testing of the unit conducted by SKF at the customers testing facility verified the effectiveness of the recommended solution. The new sealing arrangement retains the oil lubricant for the gears in the assembly and protects the unit from contamination ingress.
The resultant improved reliability and sealing capabilities of the exciter gearbox’s external seals increase the reliability and performance of the unit, which in turn enhance the customer’s operating time. Additionally, the elimination of lubrication leakage not only presents savings, but also improves environmental cleanliness and safety.
