Site-wide fire and fault monitoring for NHS hospital

May 2016 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

When fire and security experts, Tailored Fire & Security, had the requirement to collect data from its remote fire panels located in various buildings throughout Prestwich Hospital in the UK, and display these in a central control room, Omniflex was chosen to provide an Ethernet-based multiplexed alarm system.

Omniflex designed and supplied the new system, which interfaces to all of the remote TFS fire alarm panels via Ethernet and provides detailed alarm information on SIL1 rated Omni16c alarm annunciators and touch screen operator interface.

The system comprises new wall mount alarm panels for the central control room along with 32 remote Ethernet I/O devices located in the various buildings for interfacing to the panels. These wall mount units read the fire and fault alarms from the remote TFS fire panels over the Ethernet IP network using Omniflex Teleterm M3E RTUs, and displays the alarms on Omni16C alarm annunciators via serial Modbus connection. Also mounted inside the alarm panel is an Easyview operator interface, designed for communications failure interrogation. Should communication be lost to any of the remote TFS panels, a general communication failure alarm is displayed on the annunciator and the Easyview interface allows operators to pin- point exactly which of the 32 remote panels has gone down.

With its in-house engineering and applications expertise, Omniflex was able provide the complete custom solution, optimised to suit the client’s needs and budget, whilst achieving the ultimate goal of making the site safer.
