As part of an extensive predictive maintenance programme, more than 450 Monitran MTN/1100CQ vibration sensors, hardwired to a series of MTN/3000 switching units (picture), have been installed at a major London hospital - one of Monitran sensors' larger UK installations in building services.
The ability of the sensors to provide accurate vibration monitoring and measurement has enabled the organisation to completely eliminate the requirement for 'strip down' maintenance on any of the systems monitored by the Monitran sensors.
As this application demonstrates, effective vibration monitoring has an important role to play in improving and maintaining the performance of building services equipment, in particular on pumps, fans, extractor units and air handling devices used in HVAC systems and hazardous supply units. Changes in the vibration signature of properly monitored systems, provide an effective, early indication of degradation in system operation. Maintenance engineers are then able to use the data to plan an effective predictive maintenance schedule to ensure the optimal performance of all systems. This is particularly crucial in a busy hospital environment where the reliable supply of fundamental building services such as water, heating and air conditioning are key to patient comfort.
