Siemens strengthens process automation offerings

November 2001 News

As one of the top five suppliers of process automation systems and number two worldwide in process control rankings, Siemens has further strengthened this position with the acquisition of Moore Process Automation Solutions. Moore is an American company, founded in 1940 and best known for its APACS+ distributed control system and for Quadlog, the TUV certified integrated safety system.

Acquiring Moore is the latest move in Siemens' international strategy of widening its scope of competence to provide enhanced total customer solutions. "The purchase of Moore will considerably strengthen our position in process automation and enable us to improve our market position in the USA following the purchase of Applied Automation in August 1999," stated Dr Klaus Wucherer, Siemens Automation & Drives Group President and Member of Siemens' Board. "By extending our portfolio also in this field, we will have even more to offer our customers. We will sharpen our competitive edge and further close the gap between us and the leaders in the field of process automation." Siemens has also recently taken over parts of Turbo-Werk Messtechnik in Cologne, Germany, a company specialising in measurement technology on the magnoinductive principle.

The combined strengths of the two companies will offer technology that is relevant to all applications with expanded competence and increased flexibility. Donald E. Bogle, President and CEO of Moore commented, "This acquisition unites a company offering leading automation technology and services for the process industry, with one of the largest electronic and electrical engineering companies in the world."

With this acquisition, Siemens adds further functionality to Totally Integrated Automation technology (TIA), to blur the lines of demarcation between the world of computers and PLCs, between operator control and visualisation, between central and distributed automation and also between automation and drives. Standard components, modular design, lower lifecycle costs, lower spares inventories, training, controlled maintenance and servicing costs and higher productivity generate better cost-effectiveness and price/performance ratios.

For the last 16 years, Moore Process Automation Solutions has been represented locally in South Africa by Moore Process Controls. Moore Process Controls was established in 1984 as a jointly owned subsidiary and licensee of Moore Process Automation Solutions. The company has grown from a small regional office in 1984, into a leading, full-service supplier and systems integrator of large-scale distributed control systems. Today, Moore Process Controls has, as its core business operations, a single focus to provide total process control solutions, and offers strong local support for the products manufactured and imported from the American organisation, Siemens-Moore Process Automations. Moore Process Controls specialises in compressor control, safety shutdown systems, batch systems and distributed control systems. Their approach to business has earned Moore Process Controls an ever-growing number of satisfied customers in Southern Africa such as Iscor, Sasol, Angloplats, Dow Plastics, Dow Agrosciences, to name some of the larger users of the products and the integrated systems supplied by the company.

While Moore Process Controls will remain an independent systems integrator, it will be tightly coupled to the Siemens organisation through a value-added reseller agreement to sell and support the Siemens Products. It will continue to be the exclusive distributor for the Moore range of equipment.

Andre Bouffioux, Vice President, Process Automation Systems - Siemens, said: "Moore South Africa will continue to provide the current spectrum of process control products and solutions, as in the past. This means that Moore South Africa will remain the preferred contact for all APACS+ product support needs. Furthermore, Moore South Africa will now be able to provide you with solutions based on an enhanced product spectrum of Moore and Siemens process control and automation devices."
