High-performance distance measuring sensors with extreme accuracy

June 2015 Sensors & Transducers

Reliable measurement of distances in the micron range often pushes optical sensors beyond their limits. With the introduction of its new PNBC range, Wenglor has introduced a total of eight new high-performance distance sensors that set new standards in accuracy due to their maximum resolution of 0,06 μm with only 0,05% linearity error. This impressive precision is supported by excellent repeatability and thermal stability, even at output rates of up to 30 kHz.

The sensors work with a high resolution CMOS line array and determine distance to object by means of angular measurement. Due to proven algorithms, stable measuring values are obtained even for difficult measuring surfaces, for example sheet metal with speckle effect.

With a maximum range of 1000 mm, PNCB products are amongst the most accurate sensors on the market with measuring frequencies of up to 30 kHz. Minimum temperature drift means the sensor can operate immediately without a long warm-up phase. The measured value is read out simultaneously via the analog output and the Industry 4.0 compatible Ethernet TCP/IP interface. This allows the user to forward data to higher level systems directly via network integration.

The PNBC range is equipped with up to four switching outputs that can also be used, for example, as incremental encoder inputs or for switching emitted light on and off. The diverse sensor settings options are made available by external Wenglor software, which is highly suited for diagnostic purposes such as checking temperature or signal strength.

Highlights are: maximum resolution of down to 0,06 μm; constant, surface-independent measuring values; detection range from 20-1000 mm; maximum output rate of up to 30 kHz; specific algorithm against speckle effects; and Industry 4.0 compatible with Ethernet.
