Telco sensors in pulp and paper applications

May 2015 Sensors & Transducers

Some of the toughest challenges for sensors are found in the pulp and paper industry, where, high temperatures and a contaminated environment make it difficult for optical sensors to operate accurately and reliably. To overcome this, Telco has introduced the SS01 light curtain system which consists of a self-contained transmitter SST and the receiver SSR which are positioned opposite each other. The detectors are housed in a sturdy aluminium profile with T-slot mounting rail, available in lengths ranging from 160 to 1980 mm.

The series is available with a 12-30 VDC supply voltage with a solid state relay output, in light operated mode. The system is configurable to operate with either parallel or cross scanning beams which is selectable via a control input in the SSR. The SS 01 series features beam blanking function which is configurable using a second control input to the SSR. A test input to the SST may be used for either disabling or enabling the transmitting power for test purposes.

The advanced automatic sensitivity adjustment ensures that no onsite set up or adjustments are required. The signal level of each individual channel is adjusted automatically, which compensates for misalignment and contamination during operation. The transmitter and receiver are electrically synchronised by wire connection. The system is intended for static applications.

Both the transmitter and receiver detectors are protected against reverse polarity of power supplies, control inputs and output signals. The output is also protected against short circuit and inductive loads. Other features include:

• 0-10 metre sensing range.

• 4 to 384 channels (parallel beams).

• 10 to 1150 cross scanning beams.

• Plug connection.

• Automatic sensitivity adjustment.

• Power, output and system status indicators.

• High switching frequency.

Typical applications include log detection, level control of woodchips and pulp, paper break detection and edge control.
