Vibration switch for continuous equipment monitoring

June 2014 Sensors & Transducers

The VK vibration monitoring switch from ifm electronic is designed for machine mounting to monitor vibration levels. By detecting vibration level changes when they first occur, the device can help to prevent catastrophic equipment failure, reduce secondary damage and eliminate expensive downtime.

The compact switch features two setup dials that rotate to establish the maximum velocity set-point and time delay and it combines both switching function and transmitter in a compact housing. It is designed to monitor vibration on motors, pumps, compressors, fans, centrifuges and vibratory feeders. This switch eliminates the challenges found in traditional vibration monitoring such as spectrum analysis and data collection.

Implementation is based on the ISO10816 standard that defines vibration monitoring of machinery. Based on this standard, the VK monitors the frequency range from 10-1000 Hz. Most moving components on typical motor-driven equipment from 600 to 3000 rpm will fall within this frequency range. The switch integrates cost effective MEMS technology and software is not required for configuration. In just five minutes, a vibration monitoring switch can be installed and ready for operation. Compared to complicated vibration diagnostic systems and Smart accelerometers, the ifm VK vibration switch makes implementing vibration monitoring easy and straightforward. Setup is simple and highly visible LEDs provide output status of power and alarm if the set-point is exceeded.

An analogue output enables trending of vibration levels. With the switch’s MEMS technology, the VK switch provides a cost-effective solution to vibration monitoring.
