According to Helukabel South Africa national sales manager, Justin McCallum, the number and scale of new-build renewable energy plants in the last five years is significant. Due to its technology in renewable energy cabling, Helukabel South Africa has been a supplier to these projects for requirements ranging from communications to transmission cables.

The largest of the recent solar energy projects completed was at Kalkbult in the Northern Cape. This plant is designed to produce 75 MW and forms part of plans to turn the region into a hub for solar power generation.
Cabling has also been supplied for the Burgersdorp Dreunberg (69 MW) and Droogfontein (50 MW) projects.
Currently, the company is working on tenders for new plants being constructed around the country including the much anticipated Northern Cape plants in Prieska (86 MW), DeAar No 3 (75 MW) and Bokpoort (50 MW), as well as the wind energy plant at Noupoort (80 MW) in the Northern Cape.
“In terms of technology, our customers expect extreme resistance to chemical, electrical and mechanical stresses, small bending radii, a high number of flexing cycles and an outstanding lifespan,” explains McCallum.
“To ensure our products perform, we make use of state-of-the-art test facilities in Germany. We are at the forefront of the renewable energy cable and wire industry worldwide and we constantly drive cable designs for new applications. Technology advancements in the renewable sector also mean we are constantly challenged to develop top of the range products in response to emerging requirements.”
