High-speed coatings thickness gauge

September 2001 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Elcometer Instruments, a specialist in instrumentation for the quality control of coating processes has introduced a palm-sized, coating thickness gauge to its range of products for testing coatings.

The Elcometer 456 utilises the well known measurement techniques of electromagnetic induction and eddy current to measure a wide variety of coatings including galvanising, sprayed metal, chrome, plastic, rubber on steel and other ferrous metals and anodising on aluminium and other nonferrous metal substrates. The 456 gauge is claimed to be the only such instrument to have all five of the new multiple calibration adjustment methods for smooth substrates, rough substrate and unusual metal (special) substrates for optimum measurement accuracy.

The device incorporates a full graphics display offering menu-driven operation, providing user guidance. Intelligent probes allow the gauge to host a wide range of 36 probe options and four scale ranges 0-1500 µm, up to 13 mm for ferrous (F), nonferrous (NF) and dual FNF operation are available. The 456 can take readings at a speed of over 60 per minute.

They are available in either 18 integral or 15 separate straight, right angle or telescopic probe versions. The separate probe gauges have a new probe format, the plug-in integral probe (PINIP), as an option. The PINIP converts the separate probe gauge to single-handed, integral probe operation for large area surveys.

12 basic, 12 standard and 12 top models feature-options maximise the customer choice from the quick and simple Basic with its simple statistics display, through the single batch memory of the standard unit (up to 250 readings), to the fully-featured top version with memory for 40 000 readings in up to 999 batches, upper and lower limits and flexible data collection modes; each batch having separate calibration adjustments at all times.

The Elcometer 456 conforms to all ISO, BS, ASTM & DIN specs.
