Hygienically designed photoelectric sensors

July 2013 Sensors & Transducers

SICK Automation’s W4S-3 Inox and W4S-3 Inox miniature hygienic photoelectric sensors fulfil the highest standards of detection reliability, material resistance, leak tightness and hygienic design for wash- down applications.

They meet the requirements for food processing, beverage filling and production of pharmaceutical products as they are designed to withstand permanent contact with alkaline, chlorine-containing, or oxidative cleaning and disinfection agents. Moreover, both the sensors and the reflectors are constructed to follow the hygiene design directive of the EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group).

The sensors provide good immunity to ambient light and due to their high material resistance and absolute leak tightness, they are an effective solution where high availability is required in hygienic applications. The housings are made of 1.4404/AISI 316L stainless steel, which features excellent resistance against media containing chlorine e.g. disinfectants based on hypochlorite or chlorine-alkaline foam cleaners. The material is approved by the US-based Food and Drug Administration for contact with foods. The W4S-3 Inox and the W4S-3 Inox Hygiene exceed the requirements of leak tightness in accordance with IP67, IP68 and IP69K.
