SEW-Eurodrive expands its reach within the African conveying industry

July 2013 News

Johannesburg-based SEW-Eurodrive has recently expanded its reach into the mining sector. General manager for sales and engineering, Conrad Pilger, notes that the company has developed a reputation as an internationally preferred supplier of gear units for bulk handling applications.

“Having achieved significant success in smaller applications, we entered the mining sector, and today the company is specified as the preferred solutions provider for a number of end users and OEMs operating in the platinum and coal sectors across southern Africa,” he says.

Pilger says that the robust range of X Series helical, and helical-bevel, gear units are optimal for the task due to finely stepped torque ratings. The main area of application is conveyor systems: “The X-Series is an invertible gearbox, which means that it can be used for left and right handed applications. The gearbox can be flipped on its axis by 180 degrees and boasts some of the best thermal ratings and characteristics in the market. This is critical as the southern African climate makes ambient temperatures a crucial factor in gear unit applications.”

The SEW-Eurodrive export business has grown by 33% in the past financial year. “While the South African market has remained stable and profitable for us over the years, we are seeing an increasing demand for our range of equipment across the African continent, where increased investment is prompting substantial infrastructural development.”

Pilger notes that the South African branch of SEW-Eurodrive boasts a dedicated engineering department that assists customers with the complete drive package and custom designed solutions. “We compile drive packages for customers that include components such as industrial gear units, motor, couplings, brakes and base plates. Customers benefit from the fact that they can obtain the complete and fully assembled drive package from a single source, while a large local stockholding allows for shorter delivery times and increased flexibility.”

Looking to the future, Pilger remains optimistic that SEW-Eurodrive will continue to achieve sustainable growth throughout the African conveying industry. “We are projecting the same kind of growth that we recorded in the past financial year. Industrial gears will continue to contribute the most towards our growth, particularly in coal and iron ore applications,” he concludes.
