New dual port Ethernet adaptor

February 2013 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

With the introduction of the Allen-Bradley 1794-AENTR Flex I/O dual port EtherNet adaptor, Rockwell Automation can now give engineers even greater flexibility in the creation of automation networks. The Flex I/O offers all the functions of larger rack-based I/O without the space requirements. Its cost effectiveness, flexibility, modularity and reliability have made it one of the most popular distributed I/O platforms, with over four million modules sold. The Flex I/O helps eliminate multiple long wiring runs, reduces terminations per point, decreases engineering and installation costs and substantially reduces downtime. It complements all Rockwell processor platforms giving a distributed I/O solution.

This adaptor adds device level ring (DLR) capability to the Flex I/O family. It prioritises network traffic to provide timely delivery of critical data, while the use of an open standard (ODVA) allows third-party suppliers to develop compatible products.

DLR configurations allow users to create single, fault-tolerant networks, which provide resilience with no additional hardware to implement. When used in linear configuration, linear Ethernet segments greatly extend the length of the application and there is no need to run cables from each device back to a centralised switch.

Flex I/O systems can communicate on EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet and many other open networks. Users can independently select the I/O, termination style and network to meet their application needs. Adaptors and other components are available for adding to the system as user requirements change.

The benefits of using the Flex I/O are numerous and include the following:

* Reduced space: wiring is direct from sensor to terminal base and the terminal strip is eliminated.

* Functionality: 4- through 32-point modules offer the functions of larger rack-based I/O.

* Increased productivity: easy configuration and setup of I/O modules using wizards speeds up engineering and installation.

* Reduced downtime: the adaptor allows removal and insertion under power (RIUP) as well as having diagnostics.

* Exceptional choices: over 90 catalogue numbers and a breadth of specialty modules meet the needs of a wide variety of applications.

* Operation in harsh environments: the modules are conformal coated and extreme environment rated.

* Network flexibility: the Flex I/O communicates on EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Remote I/O and other open networks.

* Improved plant operations: HART analog modules pass through HART data to asset management software or controllers for improved plant operation.
