A noncontact temperature sensor that is small and inexpensive is available from PREI Instrumentation. The Raytek CI (compact infrared) sensor is housed in a threaded stainless steel cylinder 87 mm long and 19 mm in diameter. Two models cover the range 0 to 500°C with an accuracy of 2% and a response time of 300 ms. Available accessories include air or water cooling, mounting brackets and lens purging. It uses a 12 to 24 V d.c. supply and provides a Type J or K thermocouple output signal or a linear voltage of 10 mV/°C.
This four-wire sensor has an output impedance of 50 Ohm (similar to thermocouples) and thereby eliminates the accuracy problems inherent with self-powered or two-wire systems which have impedances of 5000 to 10 000 Ohm.
Common application for these rugged little thermometers include paper and plastic presses, food processing equipment, continuous drying conveyors and wherever size, price and accuracy are of significance.
