Level and pressure measurement instruments are used throughout the paper manufacturing process. During the initial stages of production, bulk waste paper or cellulose bales are transported into the pulper via a conveyor belt and dissolved through the addition of process water.
Vega has installed many Vegamip 61 microwave level switches in pulp and paper manufacturing facilities around the world, where they detect the loading height on the conveyor belt. Possible blockages can easily be detected, thus ensuring a continuous, automatic operation of the system. Once the bales have been deposited into the pulper, the mechanical action of agitators separates the fibres for the further steps of stock preparation. The process conditions in the pulper are characterised by strong pressure shocks from falling bales, vortex formation from fast rotating agitators as well as heavy abrasion from foreign substances such as wire, glass and stones.
The correct proportion of waste paper or cellulose to process water is measured by hydrostatic level sensors. Vega’s tough pressure transmitter, Vegabar 52 with a robust Certec measuring cell is implemented here. The gauge is mounted in a socket inclined in the direction of rotation and equipped with a rinsing facility. For water-resistant paper with low pH value, it is preferable to use the Vegabar 55 with its metallic chemically stable Metec measuring cell.
