SAEE launches Eastern Cape branch
June 2012
News
The recent Southern African Energy Efficiency Association (SAEE) Eastern Cape Energy Efficiency Conference marked the launch of the SAEE Eastern Cape branch and the 10 year anniversary of the SAEE. The organisation, formed to provide opportunities for the various stakeholders to meet and debate energy efficiency issues, has progressed to serve as a certification and accreditation provider, as well as facilitating the training of local professionals in energy efficiency. Current president, Professor LJ Grobler, noted in his opening address that the SAEE is the local chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), allowing South Africans to learn from overseas experiences and at times “allowing them to learn from us”.
The Port Elizabeth event, made possible by sponsorship from Eskom, was oversubscribed. “A clear indication of the interest and need to address energy efficiency and contribute to Eskom’s winter 2012 challenge of ‘Keeping the lights on’,” according to Lawrence Padachi, program delivery manager for the Eskom IDM. Padachi also described the seriousness of the region’s electricity supply.
Eskom’s Lawrence Padachi addressed the audience in Port Elizabeth.
Conference organiser, Yolanda De Lange, said in closing that it was unusual to see the venue still full at the end of the day as the audience debated and questioned Professor Grobler on the new Section 12 L income tax incentives for companies, which Treasury should be releasing in the coming months. The SAEE appointed impactChoice to keep the event carbon neutral.
