Measuring residual chlorine without chemical reagents
July 2001
Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration
Optimal disinfection and minimal chlorine dosing is achieved by on-line measurement of residual chlorine. ATI's polargraphic membraned sensor measures residual chlorine directly, in most cases without the need for sample pre-treatment. So the system provides dependable measurements without the need for expensive chemicals or time-consuming maintenance.
Residual chlorine measurement has traditionally been done by injecting chemicals into the sample and measuring the products of a chemical reaction. In contrast, ATI's sensor consists of a pair of electrodes immersed in a conductive electrolyte and isolated from the sample by a chlorine-permeable membrane. Two sensors are available - one for potable water, cooling towers and industrial wash-water for concentrations as high as 0-200 ppm. The second version is designed for chloramine* measurement in wastewater systems. ATI also provides a flow cell assembly to optimise the performance of the electrode. The user can select measuring ranges from 0-2,000 to 0-200,0 ppm with a linearity of 0,5%. (*Chloramine is a combination of ammonia and chlorine - used for disinfecting water in some parts of the world.)
