Surge arrester with integrated backup fuse

May 2012 Electrical Power & Protection

DEHN’s DEHNguard M .. CI with integrated arrester backup fuse is a Type 2 surge arrester consisting of a base element and a plug-in protection module. The compact design of the protection module includes both the actual surge arrester and an arrester backup fuse. The DEHNguard M .. CI solves the often difficult problem of choosing a suitable backup fuse. With an integrated backup fuse, the user no longer has to worry about arrester specific dimensioning requirements such as short-circuit information and impulse current carrying capacity.

The arrester backup fuse integrated into the protection module is coordinated to the necessary impulse current carrying capacity. Thus the DEHNguard M..CI is the ideal device for protection against overvoltages. It has a space saving design with only one module.

With the thermodynamic control monitoring device, the surface temperature of the high capacity varistor as well as the height of the discharge current are used for evaluation. The state of each protective circuit is shown by means of a green or red visual mechanical indicator which needs no power to operate. The red visual indicator signals the activation of the thermodynamic control monitoring device as well as the integrated arrester backup fuse. This status indication, required according to VDE 0100-534, is performed for the line conductor paths and for the N-PE path.

The DEHNguard M ..CI product range also has features such as a module locking system, a floating signalling contact and a distinctive protection module coding. The protection module can be replaced easily without tools by operating the user-friendly release button.
