The world’s first solar ski lift is being operated in Tenna, in the Swiss Canton of Grisons, where the Skilift Tenna cooperative opted for technology from Siemens’ Industry Automation Division to modernise its drag-lift.
The 460 metre long drag-lift, located at an altitude of 1644 metres in the holiday resort of Tenna, was refurbished after 40 years in operation using a combination of photovoltaic systems and automation. Since its commissioning in late 2011, the solar ski lift has produced three times more power than it requires and has doubled the number of people it can transport.
The newly installed photovoltaic equipment is based on a solar wing system whereby 82 photovoltaic modules form solar wings that are hung between ropes and automatically track the position of the sun. The entire ski lift system is operated using Simatic Touch Panel.
