Advanced diagnostics for Fieldbus pressure transmitter now available

July 2001 Pressure Measurement & Control

The Rosemount Model 3051 Advanced Diagnostics is now available from Alpret Control Specialists.

Advanced Diagnostics, a new feature to the Foundation Fieldbus version of the Model 3051, includes plugged impulse line detection diagnostic, and statistical process monitoring.

Plugged impulse line detection

The Model 3051 advanced diagnostic to detect plugged impulse lines is available for both Model 3051C and Model 3051T Foundation Fieldbus products. Fisher-Rosemount's patented pattern-recognition technology analyses the sensor signal at the rate of 20 times per second. The transmitter can be configured to provide a function block error condition and also to change the status of the primary variable when a line plugs. The benefits of the plugged impulse line diagnostic include:

* Improved plant uptime with early detection of the plugged line condition.

* Improved plant safety by indication of a suspect measurement that appears to be reading correctly.

* Reduce plant variability by eliminating the use of 'bad' data to control the process.

* Reduce maintenance costs by pinpointing the cause of the measurement error.

Statistical process monitoring

Statistical process monitoring (SPM) allows customers to monitor changes in their process. SPM calculates the mean and standard deviation of up to four Foundation Fieldbus function block outputs. Using the linking capability of Foundation Fieldbus, the input selector block in the Model 3051 can bring in data from other devices on the fieldbus segment. This allows SPM to track the PVs of both measurements in a cascade loop as well as the valve output. The benefits of SPM include:

* Reduced variability and improved plant safety with early detection of process changes.

* Correlation of data for root-cause analysis and process improvements.

* Statistical calculations at the function block update rate for higher accuracy and resolution.

Local LCD display advanced functionality

The Model 3051 local display has been available since 1999. The LCD can display up to four variables not only from the Model 3051 but also from other devices that are on the same segment as the Model 3051. The LCD can display the measurement value, set point and output of a control loop, or the flow rate and totalised value of a flow measurement. One to four different screens can be configured for cyclic display on the LCD. The meter is configured in the Model 3051 LCD transducer block using DeltaV with AMSinside, the Fieldbus Technician or any other FF configuration tool.

The 3051 features an accuracy 0.075% of span, output is Foundation Fieldbus 31,23 Kbps H1. It weighs 2,72 kg and measures 163 x 81 x 198 mm. Fisher-Rosemount says that over a 5-year period, a typical competitor's transmitter needs seven calibrations to deliver the required performance, while the model 3051 needs only one. This 5-year stability saves maintenance costs and reduces plant downtime. These factors contribute to an instrument that is well suited for critical custody transfer applications.
