Diffuse sensor offers range up to 6 m

July 2001 Sensors & Transducers

Banner Engineering is offering the new QMT42 series long-range diffuse sensor, providing both the photoelectric emitter and receiver in a single housing. This advanced device is believed to be the most powerful, compact diffuse-mode (proximity) sensor available, providing accurate sensing for applications as near as 10 mm or as far as 6 m, without a retroreflector or receiver.

The sensor offers much-needed sensing solutions to a broad spectrum of industries. Typical applications include long-range triggering from such diverse products as aircraft assemblies, sawmills or more mainstream applications such as palletisers, rail cars, automated storage and retrieval (ASRS) equipment, robotic assemblies, conveyors and large hopper level control.

The QMT42 sensor employs a collimated infrared sensing beam and special lensing for high gain, maintenance-free operation offering high sensing performance, sensing both dark and light objects reliably at varying ranges using a sensitivity potentiometer. The 10-30 V d.c., self-contained sensor, measuring only 58 x 42 x 18 mm, provides reliable, previously-unattainable, long-range proximity detection of even the darkest objects.

Green and yellow LED indicators on the sensor provide constant operating status information at a glance. The steady green LED indicates 'power on' and flashes to indicate output overload. The steady yellow LED indicates 'light sensed' and flashes to indicate marginal sensing conditions (low excess gain) in light condition.

There are two complementary outputs, one normally-open and one normally-closed, offering a response time of 1 ms. Users have a choice of NPN (current sinking) or PNP (current sourcing) models. Integral circuitry protects the power supply against damage from reverse polarity and transient voltages.

This sensor features a rugged die-cast zinc housing with a black acrylic polyurethane finish and acrylic lenses. Rated IP67, it operates reliably in temperatures from -20 to +55°C and is available with a 2 or 9 m attached cable or 4-pin Euro-style quick-disconnect fitting.
