Next-generation smart grid technologies

November 2011 Electrical Power & Protection

Moxa introduces hardware-based IEEE 1588v2 PTP IEC 61850-3 Ethernet switches.

Accurate timing and synchronisation is essential to achieve next-generation smart grid technologies for the power industry. Moxa’s PT-7728-PTP series switches, which support the IEEE 1588v2 protocol with hardware time stamping to deliver nanosecond-accurate synchronisation over Ethernet networks, are the newest addition to the PowerTrans series of IEC 61850-3 Ethernet switches.

“The PowerTrans PT-7728-PTP has already proven its reliability and effectiveness in a 500 KV IEC 61850-compliant smart substation in China. With our IEEE 1588v2 solution, traffic with IEC 61850-9-1 and IEC 61850-9-2 sampled measurement values can be precisely synchronised over the process bus. Protection systems are time-critical and the advanced synchronisation capabilities of IEEE 1588v2 technology will grow more important in the future for electric utilities that seek to improve their monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities,” explains Leo Tsao, senior director of Moxa’s power and transportation division.

As with all of Moxa’s PowerTrans products, the PT-7728-PTP series switches are designed to work reliably without experiencing any communications loss under a variety of EMI phenomena commonly found in substations. The highest level of reliability and availability in high voltage substation communications is achieved by combining high EMI immunity, a -40 to 85°C operating temperature range, isolated power inputs and redundancy technology. PowerTrans products support Turbo Ring redundancy, which guarantees fast network fault recovery (less than 20 milliseconds) and also supports standard STP or RSTP redundant protocols. Maximum uptime is enhanced by the use of dual redundant power supplies.
