Honeywell powers production systems of waste-to-energy plant in Lithuania.
Honeywell has signed a contract with Fortum to deploy its Experion Process Knowledge System and Safety Manager emergency shutdown and boiler protection system at a new waste-to-energy facility in Lithuania.
All of Fortum’s production sub-systems – both Honeywell and non-Honeywell – will be integrated into the Experion HMI with Fortum plant operators able to monitor and control all plant processes centrally. Safety Manager will help reduce the potential for human incidents and asset damage at the site.
The new power plant will be fuelled by municipal and industrial wastes as well as biofuels with production capacities of approximately 50 MW heat and 20 MW electricity. It is expected there will be an increase in energy production efficiency and, in addition, the carbon dioxide emissions caused by heat production in the area will reduce significantly.
“Fortum is one of the leading companies in environmentally benign and highly efficient combined heat and power production and is the leading company in Nordic countries in waste-to-energy production. We chose to work with Honeywell due to it offering the most advantageous technical and commercial benefits,” said Petri Härmä, project manager, Fortum.
“Our technology will serve to drive safety, reliability, efficiency and sustainability at the site, enabling Fortum to see a return on its investment more quickly,” added Timo Saarelainen, managing director, Honeywell Finland.
The new power plant is expected to begin operation in the beginning of 2013.
