SMS Industrial Services: turnkey solutions make life easier for customers

November 2011 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Founded in 1999, SMS Industrial Services specialises in the supply of control systems and instrumentation engineering services from consultation through final commissioning and handover to the general industrial, power generation and mining sectors.

SMS’s services cover the scope from turnkey C&I projects, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, functional design specifications, C&I design and drawings, PLC/Scada/PCS 7 software engineering, C&I installation and management, certified Profibus installations, commissioning, optimisation, backup and support services. The company offers automation solutions from Siemens, Schneider Electric, Adroit, Yacoub Automation, TBox Telemetry Systems and other leading suppliers.

Management information solutions include database configuration and administration, production reports, downtime reports using InSQL, Opus web-based reporting system, Microsoft SQL server, ActiveX, OLE, DDE and OPC; Oracle and Sybase technologies.

SMS also works as a project management company offering EPCM turnkey C&I projects from scheduling and resource management, cash flow forecasting and cost management, quality assurance, P&IDs, C&I designs and CAD drawings, instrumentation specifications and installation management. In addition it provides a telemetry and wireless LAN solution.

The company employs 25 permanent highly skilled and enthusiastic system integration engineers, design engineers, draughtsmen, panel builders, safety and quality officers, site supervisors, project managers, contract managers and sales and logistics support personnel. This is its commitment to ensuring that clients receive the most cost-effective, tailor-made solutions to their instrumentation and control system requirements. Attributes which best describe the company include the development and nurturing of long-term customer relationships, a commitment to shared value outcomes, providing consistent results, an emphasis on quality and a determination to complete all customer commitments successfully.

This BBBEE Level Three contributor is also graded to CIDB3 Grade 6EP, and is a Certified Profibus engineer and installer. SMS is a system integrator of Siemens, Schneider Electric and Adroit and is also the sole agent of Yacoub Automation and TBox Telemetry Systems. The company has a training centre in Witbank and offers standard Siemens SiTrain training courses, as well as customised operator, maintenance and engineering courses.

Recent projects completed successfully include Modikwa Platinum’s requirement for saving on electricity costs by improving compressor control through the use of a Siemens Simatic modular embedded controller and WinCC scada system. This automated system resulted in energy and time savings, allowing the customer to focus its resources more effectively on the core business.

The Kriel Colliery Opencast upgrade project called for a more maintenance-friendly approach enhanced by detailed operator diagnostics to reduce downtime and increase availability. It involved the replacement of the existing S5 PLC and scada system and the design, supply, engineering and commissioning of a new Siemens Simatic S7 CFC-based control system with WinCC scada.

Driven by the ethos that the essence of instrumentation and control systems lies not so much only in ‘making it work’, but rather, ‘making it work for you’, SMS designs control systems hardware, topology and software to IEC, EEE and ANSI/ISA-88 international standards and offers 24/7 technical and sales support.
