Water injection in oil production

October 2011 Flow Measurement & Control

Yokogawa’s multisensing transmitter technology saves costs.

Water injection is a method used in the oil industry to increase recovery from an existing reservoir by pumping into it to increase the pressure and sweep the remaining oil into a producing well. The flow volume of the injected water is measured via the differential pressure at the opening and a gauge pressure transmitter is installed to monitor the in-line pressure.

Most DP transmitters require extra calibration after commissioning when used with the high static pressures found in water injection applications that cause a shift in the output signal. This is where Yokogawa’s multisensing technology can generate significant cost savings for the user.

The transmitters are designed to deliver both differential and static process variables via two resonators embedded inside the silicon resonant sensor that exhibit superior stability and repeatability, even under high static pressure conditions, due to the elastic properties of the silicon. The sensors incorporated into the DPharp series are specifically designed to free the user from the usual extra calibration requirements needed to realise accurate flow measurement in these applications. These multisensing transmitters guarantee a long-term stability of 0,1% of URL for 120 months under real world process conditions.

The benefits of using Yokogawa’s multisensing pressure and flow technology in water injection applications include reduced instrumentation and calibration costs as well as more accurate and stable flow measurement under high static pressure conditions without the need for extra calibration from the user side.
