Clearline introduces solar energy solution for telecommunications
October 2011
Electrical Power & Protection
Clearline Solar Solutions is continually developing solar power systems that can be deployed in many industry sectors. The latest offering is a system designed and manufactured for the mobile telecommunications sector.
The company says it has installed a totally solar powered system that provides continuous supply to MTN’s Kaalfontein cellular tower. The installation has allowed the operating company to take the tower completely off-grid and operate it independently, saving running expenses and reducing the risk of susceptibility to power interruptions. One of the features of this system is that the solar panels track the arc of the sun to maximise power from the source.
The system is monitored via GSM modem to ascertain usage patterns and to ensure that the supply is adequate and thus far the units have performed above expectations, even during the winter months. Designed for use in developed or rural areas, there is no need for specialised erection equipment, infrastructure or electrical distribution connections. Intelligence recorded through remote monitoring includes:
* Power usage.
* Condition of batteries.
* Temperatures throughout installation.
* Status of the instrumentation.
The system is not limited to cellphone tower applications and with very little re-engineering can be deployed in any type of communication network. Fixed line as well as mobile exchanges, repeaters, receivers and localised networks can now operate efficiently and without the need to be connected to the main electrical grid.
