Hirschmann's WLAN firmware

June 2011 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Integrate WLAN devices into Profinet and Ethernet/IP networks.

The new HiLCOS 8.50 WLAN firmware from Hirschman enables the integration of access points and clients in Profinet and Ethernet/IP networks without the need for additional management software.

The firmware makes the administration easy and flexible as it does not require any additional management software. Like its predecessors, this firmware is fully compliant with the European 5 GHz standard (EN 301893 V1.5.1), and from now on will be installed as a standard equipment on all BAT54 and BAT300 series devices from Hirschmann. The HiLCOS 8.50 firmware can be downloaded free of charge from www.e-catalog.beldensolutions.com in order to update the existing access points and clients.

The use of protocol stacks for Profinet I/O and the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) from Ethernet/IP makes it possible to visualise access points via the network controllers. In that way, WLAN devices can be both easily configured and securely monitored. Over and above this, the firmware provides a number of WLAN-specific functions including signal strength and data rate of the wireless connection which are also available via the controllers. It is also possible to define threshold values and link these to alarms. Profinet and Ethernet I/P are currently in use in around 30% of all automation systems worldwide. This new HiLCOS 8.50 firmware means WLAN networks can now easily be added to such systems, opening up completely new perspectives not only in the automobile industry but also in other industrial environments sectors such as oil and gas.

Case History 190: Measurement problem ruins level control.
Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
