Afriwater 2011 to raise greater awareness

April 2011 News

A study commissioned by the trade union United Association of South Africa (Uasa) to establish the real impact of the South African water crisis, revealed that a decrease in the quality and therefore usability of water in South Africa by 1% may result in the loss of 200 000 jobs, a drop of nearly 6% in disposable income per capita and an increase of some R18 billion in government spending. The results of the study were released late last year by independent economic research and advisory firm, Plus Economics. The study also found that a decrease in the quality of water will have a negative effect on many individual economic sectors, including electricity, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism, financial services, transport and community services.

South Africa faces many challenges to its water supply from poor management of dams, sewerage works and treatment plants, acid mine drainage and other water quality issues due to increasingly polluted sources. Sustainable water and waste management are critical issues that need to be addressed and solutions sought by a combination of government, business and community involvement.

Since the inception of Afriwater in 1994, this exhibition has played an important role in the water, waste and environmental arena by consistently providing a platform for local and international companies involved in the industry to showcase products and services to all those endeavouring to preserve this precious resource through innovative solutions.

Taking place at the MTN Expo Centre south of Johannesburg from 13-15 September, the Afriwater Exhibition and co-located WISA (Water Institute of Southern Africa) and IPUC conferences should be scheduled as important dates by any persons wishing to attend an excellent forum for these subjects to be debated.
