Vibration like temperature is a common parameter measured on process plants to predict equipment failure or process problems. It is said that vibration is the better measurement because it gives an earlier warning and contains more information to enable maintenance decisions on rotating machinery.
Increasing the intervals between maintenance and work can result in considerable cost savings. However, the cost of equipment failure is tremendous; so is the lost production due to shutdown, particularly unscheduled shutdown. Also, equipment not running efficiently costs extra money in electricity and consumables. To keep a check on the mechanical health of a machine a cost effective vibration pen is now available with selectable readings. This combined with manual data collection on an Excel spreadsheet can be the start of a successful predictive maintenance plan.
The latest vibration pen, the TV260A from Time allows users to select the correct measurement parameter for an application. In the past the basic unit (still available) only measured the vibration velocity in mm/sec. The new unit can select between velocity, acceleration and displacement.
