Bosch Projects has extended its expertise together with Munitech and is now actively involved in the waste-to-energy (WtE) sector. “WtE has become an effective and important tool globally to combat the negative impact of waste disposal on the environment while providing benefits in the form of heat, electricity generation and job creation,” says Graham Ahrens, business manager, Bosch Projects.
Recent Bosch Projects initiatives have been focused on waste recycling plants and processes in Durban, where recyclable products are sorted from the waste stream for sale back to industries which can re-use them and the remainder going to landfill. The new objective, through the WtE initiative, is to reduce the volume of organic waste going to landfill where it generates methane gas as it decomposes causing significant greenhouse effects.
Although the eThekwini Municipality currently generates about 5 MW of electrical energy from landfill gas generated at the Bisasar Road and Mariannhill landfill sites, Ahrens says that the energy produced from direct incineration would be 20 times more than this. “In times where electricity is in short supply, we see enormous opportunities in southern Africa for this type of waste management and are excited by our decision to become actively involved in the sector through projects.”
