Vegapuls WL 61, the new radar sensor recently brought to market by Vega, was developed especially for water and sewage monitoring applications. In comparison with classic measuring techniques, its advanced technology offers numerous advantages.
According to Vega ultrasonic sensors and hydrostatic pressure transmitters are the primary devices used in water/sewage applications today. Radar, however, can offer considerable advantage over ultrasonics. For instance, measurement with radar is less affected by the influences of temperature, wind, fog or rain. Due to their high sensitivity, most radar sensors can still detect water levels even under a thin layer of foam.
In measurement in open channels, radar sensors can be significantly more accurate than an ultrasonic device, where errors of more than 20% can arise due to solar radiation. Vegapuls WL 61 was conceived as a cost effective alternative for use in water supply and distribution systems and is a real alternative to ultrasonics. The tightly encapsulated cable and robust housing make a high IP66/68 rating of IP66/68 possible and a variety of mounting options allow easy integration of the sensor into existing infrastructure.
Measurement data can be transmitted either directly to an existing control system or to a signal conditioning unit for driving relays or for pump control. Linearisation curves can be stored directly in the sensor, which allows, among other things, direct indication of the flow rate in an open channel.
