Photoelectric sensors for dusty areas
September 2010
Sensors & Transducers
The O5 sensors for hazardous dust areas complement the photoelectric sensors of the O5 family from ifm electronic. The ATEX sensors comply with category 3D for use in zone 22 hazardous areas (with non-conductive dusts).
Due to a change to a standard, stipulating a more severe impact test and protection of the plug connection, a revision of the mechanical design of the ATEX units became necessary. Among other changes, the stainless steel bracket was reinforced and the plug connection protected against mechanical destruction.
The units have been designed for position detection in packaging and conveying, in particular for use in mills and silos. They can also be integrated into applications in heavy industry thanks to the reinforced metal cap.
The ATEX versions are based on the established O5 Performance Line diffuse reflection sensors with background suppression, retro-reflective sensors with polarisation filter and the through-beam system. Connection of the sensors is made via a standardised M12 connector, for which ifm electronic offers sockets of the EVCxxA series with ATEX approval.
