Optical flame detectors

May 2001 Sensors & Transducers

The Flame Vision IR3 (FV) from Scott/Bacharach is a rugged, industrial grade optical flame detector designed to detect flames up to distances of 60 m and is capable of discriminating between fire and nonfire sources of radiation such as arc welding, heaters, X-ray, etc.

The detectors use three IR sensors to monitor three different wavelengths of IR frequency and have four selectable sensitivity levels. The FV contains both automatic and manual built-in test functions with the automatic system capable of verifying the cleanliness of the lens, sensor operation and electronic circuitry.

Dry contact relays allow direct connection to an approved fire alarm system and also to indicate any possible fault in the loop. An adjustable alarm time delay can be programmed up to 30 s with a selectable option for latching or non-latching.

Housed in an explosion proof housing, FV IR3 has a 90° vision both vertically and horizontally, affording the units extended detection distance. The patented flame detection capability provides two to four times the detection distance of regular UV, UV/IR, IR/IR flame detectors.

Standard features of the FV IR3 include 4 to 20 mA analog and RS485 digital outputs, adjustable response time, MIL-SPEC components, RFI/EMI protection, warning, alarm and fault relays, three-year warranty and the highest immunity to false alarms.
