Endorsements for Pneudrive Challenge

The PneuDrive Challenge, a mechatronic design competition sponsored by SEW-Eurodrive and Festo, has just announced the endorsement of their student initiative by two major industry bodies. The SAIEE (South African Institute of Electrical Engineers) and SAIMechE (The South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering) announced their support for the competition just before the official kick off of the 2010 Challenge at the end of January 2010.

“We are pleased to announce that the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) have endorsed and will support the PneuDrive Challenge. Winners of the competition stand to be granted free SAIEE membership from the institution,” commented Stan Bridges, business director of the SAIEE.

In a similar statement Vaughan Rimbault, CEO of SAIMechE confirmed their involvement with the challenge. “SAIMechE considers the PneuDrive Challenge to offer a valuable bridge between the theory and practice of mechanical engineering, and we are happy to extend our endorsement and support of the challenge. Industry’s engineering human resources are provided via tertiary education institutions, and it makes good business sense for industry to be involved in the education process. Challenges of this kind can establish a useful platform for industry to influence the education of their future engineering resources.”

This year’s challenge will see the following universities participating:

* University of Johannesburg.

* University of Stellenbosch.

* University of Cape Town.

* Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

* University of KwaZulu-Natal.

* University of the North West.

* Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

* Wits University.

“We are very happy about the recent endorsements. Both institutes are well respected in their field and it can only add further benefit to the students to come into contact with these institutions early on in their careers. We are very satisfied with the benefits that this partnership brings to the students as well as to the PneuDrive Challenge,” concludes Rene Rose, marketing manager for SEW-Eurodrive and member of the PneuDrive team.
