Position indicator for linear valves

March 2010 Sensors & Transducers

ifm electronic’s efector Valvis sensor is installed on top of a linear valve to reliably detect the stroke position up to 80 mm and to continuously indicate the position of the valve. The sensor monitors single-seat and double-seat valves providing a condition-based monitoring solution. On double-seat valves, the sensor detects the open position, closed position and seat-lift cleaning position. On single-seat valves, the sensor detects the open position, closed position and provides an additional output for seal contact wear.

The unit features a pushbutton setup to establish set-points and an integrated LED display to indicate operating status. The principle of operation is based on ifm‘s multiplexed sensing technology. The sensor incorporates 16 individual air coils that are positioned closely together to create a linear inductive sensing field. Each coil is connected to the microprocessor-controlled electronics. As a valve stem enters into the sensing field, the coils detect the valve stem position to a resolution of 0,2 mm. The resulting signal is then compared with the teach-in switch points.

As a predictive maintenance tool, efector Valvis can monitor seal wear and seal parameters. When the sensor detects changes in the condition, it sends an alarm signal to a PLC which eliminates cycle-based maintenance. efector Valvis sensors are available in two models: a 3-wire Micro DC version with analogue output; and a 5-wire Micro DC version with three switching outputs.
