Contrast sensor uses RGB processing
March 2010
Sensors & Transducers
One of the challenges in detecting registration marks or printed colour bars is determining the difference between the target and background – especially when the colours are similar.
The O5 sensor features an RGB visible light transmission LED that processes through red, green and blue to identify the best colour for contrast between the target and the background such as registration marks on labels, and print markings on boxes. The sensor also offers an inexpensive solution to more expensive vision and identification systems designed for contrast applications.
With 1 kHz switching frequency for high-speed applications, the O5 sensors have an 18 to 22 mm sensing range with high-colour contrast sensitivity and resolution. The sensors are ideal for flat objects such as labels and its compact size fits in applications with limited mounting space. For maximum flexibility, the connector rotates 270° for alignment in multiple directions.
Additional features include auto-detect for PNP/NPN configuration, and the simple ‘Teach Mode’ setup quickly establishes application parameters. A wide variety of mounting brackets for installation flexibility are available.
Typical applications include printed registration marks on a roll of paper or labels, continuous-form marking, printed colour bars on packages, reference marks for printing/cutting and to confirm presence of bar codes, date codes and data matrix symbols.
