Protection for LV and MV motors

November 2009 Electrical Power & Protection

NewElec’s 320 to 327 M Series motor protection relays protect both LV and MV motors in all industries. The Series includes user-friendly door or chassis mounted relays, capable of reliably protecting motors against overloading, phase unbalance, phase loss and user selectable jam protection trip thresholds. They can be equipped to intelligently channel high-energy faults such as short circuit or earth faults to the appropriate circuit breaking component.

The relays incorporate a 4-20 mA output loop for monitoring of the motor load as well as an optional display meter depicting the thermal state of the protected motor. Users only require five items of information to properly and adequately protect a motor. These are: the maximum load of the motor; the manufacturer’s permissible starts per hour; consecutive starts; the ‘on site’ measured application starting time; and the safe hot stall time of the machine. Using this information the user can set up the relay in an appropriate manner.

Additional features include programmed limitation to start attempts, alarm outputs for overloading and unbalance, as well as user-friendly LED fault diagnosis displays.
