Stainless steel tape position sensor

July 2009 Sensors & Transducers

ASM has expanded its line of absolute linear position sensors with the Positape WB17KT series of stainless steel tape sensors. Available for measurement ranges of 3,5 m, 6,5 m and 10 m, this robust sensor offers a long service life, with the compact housing specifically designed for rugged and harsh environments.

For over 30 years, ASM has been continually developing the WS range of cable extension position sensors. WS sensors have been successfully used in a wide range of automated process control applications by using a flexible, stainless steel cable that is wound in a single layer around a cable drum. This drum is coupled to an angular sensing device such as a potentiometer or encoder to produce an electrical signal.

Building upon this proven technology, the Positape series replaces the measurement cable with a thin, highly flexible stainless steel band. The advantages offered by tape include a long measurement range in a relatively compact housing, and the virtually unlimited life of the metal tape and its suitability for the use in confined locations where pulleys must be used. Due to the smooth surfaces of the tape, the risk of ice build up is reduced and an optional brush is available to wipe off debris from the tape as it is being retracted.

With these features, the WB17KT series is a rugged, industrial grade sensor that is suitable for the harsh environments that are associated with the 'Off Highway' vehicle market such as mobile cranes and related construction equipment. The devices are available with analogue 0 to 10 V, 4 to 20 mA or 1 k, absolute digital SSI or CAN-Bus outputs. The electrical connector can be M12 or D8 connector.
