Baumer ultrasonic sensors

July 2009 Sensors & Transducers

In lab automation small containers such as micro-well plates or test tubes are used in analytical processes of liquids. Since the liquids to be analysed are often available in limited quantities only, this market has been confronted with an ever increasing demand for highly precise level measurement. Baumer has responded to this challenge with the new series 09 ultrasonic sensors.

Capable of measuring into wells as narrow as 3,3 mm opening diameter and providing 0,1 mm resolution, this performance is converted to type 384 micro-plate results in 1,09 micro litre resolution. Thus the loss of liquid can be kept within very tight limits.

Additionally, the measurement allows the detection of flaws at an early stage of the analysis process, which keeps quality at a high level. Efficiency of scanning speed is a further highlight of the Series 09 sensors. Thanks to a housing width of less than 9 mm, eight sensors arranged in-line are capable of scanning a type 96 micro-well plate in one single cycle. The quick response – as little as one millisecond – allows fast scanning rates, which in turn lead to minimal process times: the benefit being maximum process quality with minimum time loss.

The range of applications for the new ultrasonic sensors is far larger than the described liquid level measurement in lab automation systems. In other applications where small objects need to be detected, the Series 09 sensors demonstrate their strengths. For instance, medical capsules and tablets, which have been placed in blister packaging, can be reliably detected. Non-contact ultrasonic sensors are able to detect transparent and multi-coloured objects precisely, which ensures long-term reliability and quality in packaging processes.
