Level measuring values - multilingual and worldwide

April 2001 Sensors & Transducers

Today's demands on level measuring and pressure sensors have changed. In recent years the most important characteristics were high accuracy, reliability and long-term stability, but these are things we now take for granted.

A modern sensor is required to speak several different languages (for different protocols). Often the reliable 4 to 20 mA technique is still applied, but the digital transmission of measuring values continues to gain importance. Besides analog, Vega sensors are also available in the following versions:

* Profibus PA version: this open fieldbus allows the connection of Vega sensors with instruments of other manufacturers to a unique bus line. Signal transmission and power supply is carried out via the bus cable. Even the use of the sensors in Ex areas is possible.

* Hart version: this technique is based on 4 to 20 mA transmission. A digital signal is superimposed on the power supply of the sensor. This signal provides both the measured values and the operating commands of the sensor.

* VBUS version: maximum of 15 sensors can be connected to one line. Since the VBUS protocol has been especially adapted to the requirements of level measuring techniques, a quick and reliable data transmission is ensured.

The visualisation software, Visual Vega, has been developed in order to present measuring values clearly either as a bar chart, or chart and time diagram. Photographs of the client's plant, or their own graphic charts may also be used to enhance the visual display.

Visual Vega constantly keeps the client informed about the actual values in their plant, regardless of plant connection to either direct network line, telephone cable or Internet connection. The software always edits a HTML file for each update of the measuring values. Files can be viewed using any Internet browser. Faxes and e-mails may be sent automatically, once a pre-defined limit is reached.
