Official opening showcases software

April 2009 News

The official opening of Advit Animal Nutrition’s Sebenza, Gauteng, plant was held on Friday 9 March 2009. Approximately 150 guests from Advit’s technology partners, suppliers and guests were on hand to help the owners and staff celebrate this milestone event.

Proceedings were opened by Dr Christel Coetzee, managing director Advit and Michael Lappas, business manager BASF. Cobus du Preez, Advit factory manager, gave a brief presentation on the manufacturing process and Andrew Ashton, MD of ProLoCon provided an overview of the traceability systems and workflow recently incorporated at the plant. Nicolas Kerfant, director marketing and sales BASF cut the ribbon and officially declared the new facilities open.

Advit manufactures a wide assortment of vitamins, minerals and feed additives for the animal feed industry and prepares individual mixes based on each customer’s specific nutritional needs.

The company was formed in 2007 when management of BASF Animal Nutrition in South Africa undertook a management buyout of its Isando premix plant. At the time of the buyout, a supply and technical agreement was signed between the new owners and BASF. The company continues as exclusive distributor of BASF Animal Nutrition products in South Africa and maintains close ties with its German technology partner.

Since the buyout, the plant has been relocated to Sebenza and plant and processes have been progressively upgraded.

Traceability is an essential requirement for manufacturers in this industry as medications which are beneficial to one species can be fatal for another. The new Agricultural Production Enhancement Agents Act is expected to mandate HACCP for feed supplement and feed manufactures. Once this legislation is enacted, traceability will become mandatory, as it already is in many countries.
