VWS Envig wins desalination tender

April 2009 News

VWS Envig has been awarded a tender by the Ndlambe Municipality in the Eastern Cape to supply a water treatment plant that will provide potable water to the communities of Cannon Rocks and Boknes, situated 130 km east of Port Elizabeth.

The project sees VWS Envig refurbishing the existing plant to ensure that it delivers 750 cubic metres per day of treated water, in compliance with SANS 241 specifications. The water will be treated through desalination by reverse osmosis to remove dissolved salts from sea water intrusion in the ground water.

According to Abrie Wessels, VWS Envig general manager, Western Cape region, the project is currently in the design and procurement phase. “The commissioning of the project is scheduled for May 2009. VWS Envig will operate and maintain the plant for 14 months and will also provide operation and maintenance training to municipality staff to ensure the plant’s long-term viability.”

VWS Envig will supply and integrate a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) skid with pre- and post-treatment for the project. The SWRO skid will be manufactured at VWS Envig’s facility in Paarl.

“The main challenge of the project will be ensuring compatibility between the existing and new plant in terms of infrastructure and equipment. However, our experience in completing similar jobs, gives us a base of expertise that will ensure the success of the project,” concludes Wessels.
