Industrial LAN/modem router
March 2009
Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
eWON 2005 is the industrial LAN/modem router for the machine builder, OEM, infrastructure, utilities and system integrator markets. It features an IT LAN to industrial LAN IP router that also embeds a modem for remote access to the industrial LAN. Therefore, any PLC or automation equipment connected to the industrial LAN through Ethernet, or through the serial port, can be accessed both ways: from the IT LAN and/or from any remote network or Internet, via the modem.
Seamlessly integrated with the PLC programming environment, eWON 2005 monitors and collects data into internal tags while PLC maintenance is performed. The device has both web and FTP servers embedded as well as an independent alarm management system.
With its embedded modem, eWON is the access and service gateway to perform remote maintenance on distant equipment. Once the call is established, the programming application accesses the PLC or the device transparently, from the programming port or from the Ethernet socket.
With two sites connected to the Internet, it is possible to create a secure VPN connection to exchange data as if both locations were on the same LAN. This method is ideal for replacing old leased lines with a modern, flexible and secure network link.
eWON brings this technology to the user enabling one single data-acquisition system or scada to access and seamlessly integrate realtime data from both sites into a single Historian, MES or ERP company package.
It is now possible to create an application private network using eWON units. By using VPN technology through broadband Internet access it is possible to securely link all remote sites and the central monitoring station on the same virtual cable, for data acquisition, remote monitoring and alarm notification purposes.
Two new modules, the eWON 2005CD and eWON 4005CD have been added to the range to bring smaller and cost-effective form factor as well as MPI/PROFIBUS protocol support.
The eWON 2005CD and 4005CD modules improve serial connectivity, adding MPI/PROFIBUS protocol support to existing DF1, UnitelWay, Modbus RTU and Fins Hostlink protocols. The MPI/PROFIBUS versions of eWON 2005CD and 4005CD modules give a truly transparent communication between Siemens SIMATIC Step 7 on a PC and the Siemens S7-300/400 network.
The modules offer a WAN Ethernet port for connecting to the Internet passing outward through the local IT network and firewall. By using Talk2M, remote authenticated users can access in a fully bi-directional VPN link from their PC any eWON device connected to the Internet.

Loop signature Part 2-2: Feedforward Control: Part 1
Michael Brown Control Engineering
Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
Feedforward control is a powerful technique that can dramatically improve control variance in cases where load changes cause big deviations from setpoint and the actual process dynamics are too slow to allow the feedback controller to operate fast enough to catch these disturbances.
