Magnetic rotary encoders optimise alternative energy generation.

Sensors are increasingly used in alternative energy generation to improve efficiency. In solar energy applications, for instance, solar modules are aligned according to the position of the sun in order to optimise their efficiency. Encoders are used to determine the current position of the panels. Magnetocode encoders from Posital, which use price-efficient and robust magnetic technology to determine position values, are especially suited for this purpose. They have also proven themselves in other alternative energy applications, such as wind turbines, where they are used to increase efficiency in pitch and Azimuth control systems.

The MCD encoders are available as single-turn models with a maximum resolution of 12 bit per revolution and as multiturn models which additionally register up to 8192 revolutions (13 Bit) on request. Based on the innovative Magnetocode technology, the units do not require batteries. Current absolute position values are stored permanently even without voltage supply, and are provided instantly after activation.

The magnetic functional principle not only enables a robust design and compact dimensions but also makes the encoders considerably less costly than optoelectronic models. They are suited for rugged environments and withstand humidity, temperatures and vibrations. Available as solid and hollow shaft versions, the encoders, which have a diameter of 36,5 mm, are suitable for applications with limited installation space. They are integrated into automation environments via a CANopen or an SSI interface.
