Pumping statistics: combined sensor for pump diagnosis and pressure monitoring

August 2008 Sensors & Transducers

The new PIM sensor from ifm electronic combines an analog output signal for static pressure measurement with a binary diagnostic signal for the assessment of pump condition. The continuous status monitoring ensures that necessary maintenance can be timeously planned, improving system reliability and increasing machine uptime.

The pump diagnostic sensor enables diagnosis independently of pump type, pump characteristics and rotational speed. The conveying characteristics of the pump to be monitored are continuously measured as are those of the surrounding system. Significant changes are detected and lead to an automatic alarm message when critical operating states with system damage potential are reached. The pump sensor is easy to set requiring no specialist knowledge, and once installed the state of the pump can be quickly assessed via trend display.

Condition-based monitoring of the system around the pump adds additional benefits. Harmful disturbances such as air trapped in the medium, clogged filters, deposits in pipes and sticking valves are detectable by the PIM. Eradicating these adverse external conditions eliminates pumping at out-of-spec operating points, thus reducing the likelihood of damage to the pump and its drive.

The second output of the sensor provides the system operating pressure independently of the diagnostic function. It can be configured as a switching output with hysteresis or as a scaleable analog output.

The integrated Aseptoflex adapter thread enables hygienic connection to all common process adapters, as an alternative a variant with G 1 thread is also available. Integrated temperature decoupling makes the devices suitable for use in cleaning in place (CIP) applications.
